eyeOS

June 11th, 2008

Well I have had quite an interesting week with eyeOS. I was trying it out, whilst been contacted by the owner of Trax. Then I went to make this blog post last week and couldn’t get around to it - so here it is! Also, before I start, I would like to thank the Owner of Trax for featuring a link to my blog post on the Trax website (next to Apple!). Thank you!

Well, I continued to be impressed with eyeOS. I have had a few very minor negative issues - but that’s either because of myself - or because I am running eyeOS on my PC running Vista! Other than those, I have nothing but praise for the OS.

First thing to praise is the interface again. I still really like the interface and could work with it as a permanent OS, its simplicity and ease of use makes it perfect. Also the contrast of it (blue and white) is easy to see for anyone who may have trouble with their eyesight.

One of the things I have been most impressed with is the amount of apps that came with it, considering it is all free! I made good use of the eyeFTP application when uploading a new template to a friends website. Again, the FTP’s simplicity makes it perfect. Another cool app is the eyeGameMaker which I played around with for quite a while - I like that a lot, definitely worth a look!

Another cool app is the eyeStickFigureAnimator which is similar to Pivot and is lots of fun to work with! The eyeProcess app is cool as well, it is similar to Microsoft Task Manager, and although doesn’t have as many features is still just as good. Some of the games included are good too, such as FulltimeKiller which I played on for a while… I really like the RSS Feed Reader too, that’s quite a nice app to work with. The browser within eyeOS is eyeNav, which although minimalistic, is still good.

On to design - well I couldn’t change my desktop background (in eyeAdmin) because I didn’t have any pictures to make a background although eyeOS does give you the capability to do that, which is good. Also there are a number of themes available - none of which I could try due to a ‘Function is not ready yet’ notification - although I am sure they are just as good as the default, which you know I like!

After monitoring eyeOS for about 10 minutes idle, then 10 minutes throughout working with it, I realised that eyeOS doesn’t take much power and RAM to run. Another good thing about eyeOS is that it has options to import default bookmarks and default search engines. Also the option to export default bookmarks and search engines from eyeOS. These things can be done in System Preferences (available from the eyeOS menu on the desktop), from this menu you can also change browser start page, autorun commands, passwords, profile etc.

Some things I would like to see in eyeOS include the capability to move the OS itself from monitor to monitor (in a multiple-monitor set up) when running Windows (without using a batch file), I asked the owner of Trax about this and he said it is possible on a Mac as it opens in a proper ‘window’ although on a PC it opens full-screen without the capability to drop and drag- I would like to see this possible in Windows. Another cool feature would be zoom capability within the OS, (this may already be there - I may has missed it) for the visually impaired. There are many games available on eyeOS at the moment including FulltimeKiller (mentioned above) and Chess which are both cool games, although I think it would be nice to see some more.

Other than the very few things mentioned above, I have absolutely no problems with eyeOS and have nothing but praise for it and its developers. Also, eyeOS have partnered with GMV and I wish them the best of look for the future.

I will probably do a few tutorials or something else on eyeOS sometime over the next few months, look out for those!

Note: Due to a misinterpretation about some facts earlier in the week, I made a fundamental error of judgement - although I feel I have now rectified this. I apologise for any inconvenience caused.Ben

May 29th, 2008

There hasn’t been a massive number of posts on this blog, largely because of the fact that Matthew and I are quite busy at the moment. I am however managing to make a small number of blog posts over on My Blog so take a look over there.

Hopefully Matthew and I will be back to blogging here soon. Bye for now.
